Empowering Communities Through Faith and Education: Religious Leaders Join Hands to Combat Leprosy Stigma

July 29, 2025- BASTOB—Initiative for People’s Self Development—organized a powerful program under the Building Resilience for a Better Life project, funded by The Leprosy Mission International (TLMI). The program brought together religious leaders, community representatives, and development practitioners to engage in critical dialogue on leprosy awareness, reducing stigma, and fostering inclusive support systems.
The event was chaired by Mr. Ranjit Chandra Das, Assistant Executive Director of BASTOB, who emphasized the importance of community-led approaches in breaking the social taboos surrounding leprosy.
Religious leaders play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion in communities. Their voice can counter myths, promote scientific understanding, and encourage compassion towards people affected by leprosy. Their active involvement is vital in building inclusive societies where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
During the event, BASTOB awarded educational scholarships to several children from leprosy-affected families. These scholarships will support school attendance, reduce dropout rates, and promote equal opportunities for children who often face social and financial marginalization.

This initiative marks a meaningful step toward the elimination of leprosy-related stigma and toward creating a resilient, empathetic, and inclusive community. With the continued support of The Leprosy Mission International and local religious leaders, BASTOB is committed to making leprosy not just curable — but no longer a cause for social exclusion.
